The American Academy in Berlin seeks a talented organizer, thinker, and communicator for the position of Senior Program Coordinator for the Richard C. Holbrooke Forum for the Study of Diplomacy and Governance. As Senior Program Coordinator in the Holbrooke Forum, he/she will play a central role in developing and organizing activities including high-level speaker series, policy workshops, strategy sessions, task forces, coordinating and drafting publications, and other projects.
In December 2013, the American Academy in Berlin launched the Richard C. Holbrooke Forum for the Study of Diplomacy and Governance. The Forum was conceived by the American Academy as a special remembrance of its founder and his lifelong commitment to applying the tools of diplomacy and statecraft for solving the protracted challenges to the well-being of humanity. The Forum is guided by his determination to reframe conventional wisdom, redefine the task at hand, and stimulate the intellectual courage needed to deal with seemingly insoluble conflicts.
The Forum will address the most intractable issues of global statecraft and subject them to the broad, inclusive, and rigorous approach characteristic of the late Ambassador Holbrooke. Its goal will be to render his method into a searching exercise that can produce the sort of startling insights for which he was known. Its compass will be the first principles of democracy and the moral imperatives of a humanitarian world.
The American Academy is looking for a Senior Program Coordinator to coordinate and implement the first steps of the new initiative. The position reports directly to the Executive Director.
His / Her responsibilities include:
– Coordination of strategic planning and execution
– Organization of planned / scheduled workshops (detailed planning, logistical preparation, invitation management, communication, press)
– Holbrooke Distinguished Visitors: Coordination of recruitment, organization of visits
– Creation and maintenance budget
– Design and execution of regular program
– Coordination of publications / communication of programs and workshop findings
– Development of recommendations for participants and other contacts for the Forum
– Development and maintenance of contact database
– Liaison to Dean of Fellows and Director of Programs
– Liaison to the Advisory Board of the Holbrooke Forum
The position requires an entrepreneurial personality with excellent organizational skills who takes initiative and is able to work independently. The Senior Program Coordinator should have a problem-solving approach, excellent research and communication skills, and be capable of communicating effectively with and between very different professions on the Forum’s themes. He / She should have a broad interest range from scholarship to the challenges to statecraft in the present century. His /Her academic background should be in international relations, public policy or political theory. Experience in project and program management is strongly preferred. The job requires excellent MS Word and Excel skills, general computer literacy, outstanding written and spoken English and German language skills, a team-oriented attitude and the ability to handle many tasks and topics simultaneously and under strict deadlines. We are looking for a motivated and flexible person who likes to work in a hands-on environment.
